Year of the car over - what now

2004 was to be the "year of the car". Market share was to go up as quality and style went up. Once again though, market share was lost as the big Japanese brands
continued to have record years. With GM and Ford all spent out in offering new cars and still losing, is it time to throw in the towel? Is there anything that can be done?
