Broken / Bad Ignition

Quick questions to my fellow Foci owners who have experienced problems with their ignition.

  1. Is the problem the tumblers?
  2. How long of a fix?
  3. How much did it cost?

My '00 ZX3's ignition will not work. It has the usual symptoms that I have learned about from this newsgroup, such as the key will not go in the ignition.

I have talked to my mechanic about it, he is doing some research about it as I plan to have him fix my car instead of taking it to the local dealer. I am hoping I do not have to have it towed to a dealer to help keep the costs down. And the local dealer for me, Miracle Ford, is in my experience and from others, probably the WORSE dealership to have to go to. I will leave it at that.

Thanks for your help everyone! Kevin

That, I don't know.

My car was three years old when the first switch died. I hope to get, at least, that much life out of the new one.

Three hundred dollars, in Canada, installed by a dealer.

I bought a 2000 focus 2 years ago. They day I took it home, I could not start it. The dealer ship replaced the ignition at no charge to me. A year later (almost to the day of purchase), the ignition broke again. The key would not turn. The dealership replaced the ignition at no cost to me. Yesterday, the igniton broke again (8 months after it was last replaced). The dealership and Ford Canada will not fix it this time without me paying for it (approx $300) because it passed its warranty criteria which was 1 year or 20,000 km. I have put 25,000 kms on the car since it was last replaced. I called Ford Canada to complain, and they told me there was no recall on this particular issue.. WHY? I asked.. because not enough people have complained about it. The dealership where I purchased the car, and another Ford dealership told me this was a common problem.. Why won't FORD take responsiblity for this problem and fix the ignitons? I am very mad at Ford. When the ignition is repaired this time, I am going to sell the car, and never , never, never buy a FORD again. That is too bad, because I really like this car..

check out my previous reply, got a locksmith they will probably do it cheaper, my borther was going to get one for about $25 USD, I got the Ford one for $64 USD, because they had one that day, didn't have to wait for it, had him take it out, and I put it back in after he keyed the lock.

I too have a 2000 Focus 200,000 kms on it just had the 4th ignition go bad. Dealer in Nova Scotia contacted Ford of Canada, they are replacing the ignition ,all door locks ,trunk lock and suppling new keys,as well paying for the $100 towing bill..Can't beleive Ford may be finally taking responsibility for this problem.
