Fuel Filling Issues

I know this might sound like a retarded problem but its the first time I'm run into it. I have a 2002 ZX3 and starting about a month ago when I go to fill it up it repeatedly trips the auto cut off on the fuel pump (like it should when its full) but it does this almost immediately. If I continue pumping the fuel overflows. If I wait a second and only fill at half speed then it takes longer but it still trips, usually 8 times during a fillup. It's acting like its full but its not and I can still put at least 10 gallons in the tank.

My best guess is that the air pressure in the tank isn't releasing like it should. Is there a pressure relief valve? What else could be causing it? I haven't taken it to the dealer cuz they always try to rip me off and take far to long to do it.

Thanks for any help.

You get this on most cars from time to time although some are more prone to it than others. Its caused be the fuel pump sensing the back pressure and shutting off. If the fuel nozzle is angled such that the fuel hits the side of the filler pipe then that will do it. Try twisting the fuel nozzle to a different angle or pulling it out about half an inch. It may make the difference.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your car.

Actually I think it's either the car or the gas station as mine has done it since day one on both cars - both my 2000 and 2003 Focus. It's normal to click off two or three times (if you read the manual it says that) but if you put slower (like medium) it'll only happen a few times. Some stations are worse than others...good luck. Thanks, I've tried different things and even different pumps, I'll try the different angle suggestion. Its just weitd that it started suddenly and is consistent now.

Thanks for the advice.

If you find out what's causing it let me know because every stupid place I go it's spitting gas at me towards the end and won't cut off without overflowing...in the book it says it's normal to cut off 3 times before it's full - but not like that and not cutting off at the end. Frustrating. Linda
