high frequency sound

Hi,

I've posted this message before, but am in need of more info. A month ago my Ford Focus wagon 2003 developed a very irritating high frequency sound when driving in 5th gear between 80 and 120 km/h (50 and 75 mph). I went to the dealer, they couldn't fix it and Ford Holland says it's a known problem with this car, they can't do anything about it and it falls within their tolerances. I'd like to know if any of you out there experienced the same, what the dealer said, was it fixed and if not what steps you took afterwards. I'm not leaving it with that because 1) it's a very irritating (perhaps harmful to the ear?) noise and 2) it lowers the value of my car when trading it in. Please let me know

Hans

Hi, My Focus Zetec 2 litre, German made, has a slight transmission noise that I believe come from the final gear of the manual transmission. It's loudest around 75-80 km/h and when no load from acceleration or retardation is applied on the gears. The Ford shop said it is not covered by the warranty, but if it got worse it could possible be covered by the cars insurance for unexpected machine failure. I did not press them very hard because I bought it from a non Ford dealer, 18 months old. It has not gotten any worse between 30000 km when I bought it and 70000 km as of now. Also, when I travel at highway speeds of 90 or 110 km/h, the most common speed limits here, nothing is heard. If it got any worse, or heard at highway speeds I should have to deal with it. I believe the transmission for the 2 litre is of older design than for the smaller engines. It's also hard to shift when cold. The new Mondeo transmission is much nicer, and the engine too, but handling of the Mondeo II can't touch the Focus. /per

Could you explain the sounds you're hearing better ? I'm hearing something strange that I just can't explain yet. I never noticed it on my 2000 wagon but have moved up to a 2003 ZX5 now and have noticed an unusual sound. Thanks Linda (auto - not manual though)

What did the dealer have to say about the noise?

When hearing your explanation now, I think this is not the same as the gear noise that I (and others) have. /per
