1980 f150 camper special 2 dr 2wd- rear differential model/type/size

my question is, it would appear that i cannot access the rear plate to get into my dif, its bolted up so that i would have to take the universal shaft off then dis-assemble the whole differential from the front- lots of work to acces the differential should i have to remove the front of the differential to remove any sort of retainer clip that would stop the axle from coming out...

- i assume this would be the 9 inch because it has no access point other then the front which intails taking apart everything, ie the backing cover plate is welded to the differential, thats the way it was designed and made

-on the 8.8 size i would assume that the backing cover plate is attatched to the differential by bolts so it can be removed and accessed somewhat easily as opposed to the 9'er

please clarify please thank you

See my post to your previous thread. If it is the 9incher, the pumpkin drops out from the front. It is bolted in from the front. You do not have to screw with the differential to service the axle seals on a 9 incher. If it is the 8,8 type, it has a cover bolted to the rear of the housing that must be removed to access the lock bolt and remove the "C" clips that retain tha axles. Either of these are easily service with a little physical labor. IMHO, the 8,8 is easier to service than the 9 incher because it can be difficult to remove the axles with makeshift tools.

Think about it... ... the axles pretty much go all the way thru the center section that you want to remove. How far are you going to get?

Sure sounds like a 9 inch to me. You -could- Google "Ford 9 inch" and probably come up with all sorts of information.

To remove the axles; Raise rear of vehicle and properly support. Remove tires/wheels. Remove brake drum. Remove four retainer nuts behind axle flange. looks like this:

Pull axle from housing. If the axle is stuck, you'll need a slide hammer with axle attachment.

  1. You have a 9in. rear diff. The differential carrier comes out the front, but you don't need it out to replace the axle seals.

  1. Pull the tires, then rear drums, then remove the axle retainer nuts through the hole in the axle flange. Then you can use the tire/wheel in lieu of a slide hammer to pop the axles by leaving the lug nuts loose. Use a slide hammer if they're aluminum wheels. One or two good "snap" tugs will bring the axles out. The seals are sandwiched on the axles behind the bearings. They are pressed on. Take them to a machine shop like NAPA and have new bearings and seals pressed back on.

  2. Reinstall in the reverse of above, top off rear end grease.
