1988 (ranger) automatic trans removal

my brother is trying to remove his automatic trans from his ford ranger.. he cannot remove the cross member... he removed the 2 nuts,,, but cannot get the bolts to side out.... he used a hammer and another bolt to drive them out... he said that he whacked them for a half an hour,,,, i think he was whacking the wrong thing...this i gotta see,, i asked him if he lifted the trans up a little to take some of the weight off the bolts,, he said he did..how do the bolts slide out???

his problem is, unfortunately, common

the bolts are seized to the steel inserts inside the rubber bushings

if he got them out, he should consider himself lucky.........usually it takes some torch work; the best way is to torch off the heads of the rivets holding the brackets to the frame, then punch them out and remove cross member, brackets and all, you can use bolts to re-install it

CAUTION: THE FUEL LINES RUN INSIDE THE LEFT FRAME RAIL, AND ARE PLASTIC............BE CAREFUL !!!!!!!

Who does the first time? ;)

A good hammer mechanic knows that sometimes you can beat the crap out of something and not budge it then use a bigger hammer and it'll move the first lick.

Don't know if this applies, but it's almost eerie when it does happen.
