1989 Full Size Ford Bronco 5.0L

Folks, This is a first time for me posting here. I have exhausted all my resources and can't seem to figure out what's wrong. I have a 1989 Full Size Bronco

5.0L and when I engage the 4wd (4H) through the shift on the floor I have no problem. Meaning I go into 4H no problem. If I want to engage 4L I can't seem to get it to go into place to engage it at the shift, therefore I can't get it in 4L. Could it be a faulty Case Motor or what? Is there some kind of linkage hanging up?? I can't seem to pin point this problem. Maybe someone with experience and knowledge here can enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

You need to be stationary, and be in Neutral.

What happens when you can not select 4LO?

If you have a floor shift lever, there is no motor on the transfer case. Try putting the transmission in neutral, and then go to 4L. Also you might try letting the truck roll *very* slightly while going into 4L.

Sometimes I've had to put it in neutral and shut the engine off. Slam it into 4L, then restart the engine. Don't know why ... but it works.

I'm sorry to admit this, but I had that problem, and my problem was I didn't push the knob sideways as shown on the shift pattern. You gotta go left, I think. Anyway it's shown on the knob, there's a sideways jog of the lever.
