2.5 liter timing belt

The ford shop says the timing belt on my 1999 2.5 liter should be replaced at 60,000 miles. The owners manual only says only to check the belt tension at 120 thousand, no replacement schedule is mentioned. Is this a necessary maintenance item or a shop cash cow?

I have an older Toyota Diesel. The "T Belt light indicator" didn't come on before the belt broke. Apparantly it was set at 100K "miles" I live in Canada and apparantly the light was to come on at 100,000 kilometres not miles and not set at the factory properly. Some engines will have no problem if the belt goes but others WILL. If you don't want to replace the belt at least check to see if the engine will survive if the belt goes. There use to be a site that listed the engines. I am sorry but I can't find it.

100,000 kilometers = 60,000 miles.

What is the cost of checking the belt verses replacement?

I know in the Toyota there is a considerable differance. There is a hole near the top in the cover. You put your finger in and test the tension (Free). Unfortunatly you can't realy be sure if there are cracks in the belt unless you remove the cover. I have the belt changed on due milage because the engine is irreplaceable these days.
