2005 Ford Expedition

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition XLT. It has reached a little over 100k miles. I am now ready to give it a tune up but no repair center will touch because they are afraid of the spark plugs breaking. Also I need to do a transmission oil change. I missed the the transmission oil change at 50k. Is there a risk changing now at 100K? Some mechanics have said not to change because once you do, tranny will start to fail. They say when you change, shavings from inside the transmission oil used to keep it lubricated will no longer be there causing it to loose what ever compression or support it provided. Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks

The posts on this newsgroup are astonishing. Where do your mechanics come from? Get on with your maintenance, get it done. Change the trans filter and the fluid, do not, I repeat do not let them talk you into the reverse flush out. If you reverse flush, everything trapped in the filter will be blown back through the transmission. (I change the fluid & the filter every 50,000 - My F-150 has 200,000 on my truck with no problems) I don't think much of your mechanics, they don't want to change your plugs? Grab the bull by the horns and change the plugs. It's challenging because you have to remove the coil from each & every plug. When you re-install the plugs, put plenty of dielectric lubricant on them before screwing them in.....

While I agree with the sentiment to resist the suggestions to reverse flush the transmission, it is false that the stuff trapped in the screen will be pushed back into the transmission. If the hoses are hooked up correctly, the stuff in the screen will be the first to reach the transmission cooler, which means it will be pushed out before it can get anywhere else.

You need to find a better shop(s), or go to the dealer to have the plugs changed. Spark plugs in that vintage Expedition can be a problem, but Ford dealers have the tools and procedures to handle replacing the plugs. The local shop I use also purchased the necessary tools.

I'd change the transmission fluid, but avoid any sort of reverse flush. A fluid exchange machine is fine, but not a reverse flush machine.

I will probably just take it to Ford and have them do it correctly. Its pricey but at least they will do them correctly. I dont think I have much of a choice if I dont want to do and other shops I called wont either.

Thanks RC

I taken it to PepBoys and other local mechanics. The local mechanics say they can do but it will take all day, plus the price they give me to fix is the same as the dealer. PepBoys says I need to take to dealer cause they cant work on my model. I usually do car repairs myself but after hearing horror stories about the spark plugs, I dont want to get in a situation where I need to call for help cause i cant fix and end up paying more than what I want.

I was told the same thing at a Firestone repair shop. They didn't recommen d an oil change if it did not need it. This was about a few years ago; how ever, lately the transmission has been having trouble kicking into second g ear. Luckily, my cousin came for a visit from out of town and I asked him about it. He checked it out and told me that there were little granules in the oil which were interfering with the lubricants. He recommended that I take it for an oil change and to have the mechanic change out the control modulator. So that is exactly what I'm going to do. I believe the mechani cs are right, if there is no need to change the oil then it's best not to. Just continue to check it now and then and make sure there's nothing in th ere.

I may have posted a trans fluid change here ?

get a set of line or brake line wrenches in metric

the hose may be on the passenger's side when you take the doghouse off.

get a clear poly house to fit the trand plug which is on the bottom and a hose clamp.

you need the capacity of the trans doubled.

and bottles for the recycle center.

run motor in neutral n the fluid pumps out.

when the fluid shows bubbles in the outline you're using stop the motor and add, more fluid...doahn keep running the motor.

stop when you use all the fluid.

...you do this after taking the pan off n cleaning it with a green industrial scrub pad from 3M at Home Depot. Walmart has a large open plastic pan to under the dropping pan which drains fluid out the sides.

Gloves

Spray tack adhesive for the gasket bpught FROM FORD WITH THE FORD FILTER from your VIN you will show FORD ON A LARGE PIECE OF CEREAL BOX CARDBOARD LIKA FLASH CARD.

while there make an apt for the plug change.

You no mechanic ? let FORD change the plugs.

wash the motor off first esp the top.

There are utubes for these activities. do not silicon the pan gasket.

when done with the trans change spray paint the pan edges and new screw you installed with rustoleum primer and white gloss. use a mask. hold your breath spray and squirm out.

......

that's for a 2008 trans setup.

also get in with a new fill of fluid...Castrol works.....run motorstep on brake n shift into reverse -2 - 3 for a minute each. do that twice with clean fills.

you need a tall funnel from Walmart....know which one you never knew what its for ? now you do !

you need to flush the brake fluid out ....see Summit Racing for a flush unit that clamps onto the reservoir...all the tools can come from Summit.

while there check the discs for lubrication points and check the rubber caps on the rear if discs there.

buy a grease gun from summit and right angle grease fittings for the front end.

I used carburetor cleaner with the green scrub pad but also had brake cleaner..with the brake cleaner and your pan should need it....place otherwise clean pan so you can spray upwind and have the overspray/fumes go downwind...hold your breath.

let the sit there and burn off then spray with the crab cleaner n scrub...use a mask.

scrub the edges where gasket was....perfect block and pan.

the 2008 has a reuseable gasket but buy a new one.

I have an '05 Ford Expedition did a flush and oil change was driving fine then out of no where it dies out on me. The oil gauge keeps jumping could it be the sensor? Or did the flush damage the sensor? What could have caused it to die out?

Low oil pressure could possibly tell the computer to shutdown the engine. If the sensor's jumping around that could be why.
