91 Ford Ranger - California Emissions

Gentlemen:

I've got a 91 Ranger I bought new in California. I'd like to remove the California emissions system to increase performance and mileage (yeah, I know, how much can ya increase a 2.3L).

First, is it worth doing? Second, what does it entail?

Thanks,

Jack.

At the least replacing the computer, which by itself is going to cost more than the project is worth. I'd leave it alone and look for other means of increasing performance like regearing or opening up the exhaust flow.

By the way, in California you (practically) can only register a non-California vehicle if you brought it with you when you moved there, and it can only be resold to a junkyard. This narrows the used car market somewhat, and could be worth a little money if you ever decide to sell the truck.

Brought my '93 F250 to Calif from Virginia in '97- $600 smog fee. Once entered into their database, passed smog test every year. Sold it last year. Buyer had no problem with registration or smog test.

I went through this back in '95, and the info that I got (in person and later through their web site) is what I put here. However, the current info doesn't say anything about resale of out of state used vehicles:

: Thanks for the correction! : Calif is one strange place - and if you don't like the answer you get at one DMV, you go to another and everything's fine. Go figure . One thing I have noticed that's truly amazing is just how easy it is to register a homebuilt motorcycle. Under an hour every time, inspection and all.

Modern cars and trucks emission systems are no longer just bolt on addations they are intergrated systems which effect each other. Your best bet is to make sure your tuned to a tee, all systems are working as designed (no check engine light) and all your filters are good. You could do some exhaust work but for the most part you'd be advised to leave the systems in place and alone.
