97 f-150 private party selling price???

Hello, This xmas I am going to buy a Toyota 4runner, and I am going to sell my 97 F-150 privately b/c they always cheat you on the trade in. I am using edmunds as a baseline for what I want to sell it for. The trade in price/ private party price/ and dealer retail prices are $6,456/ $7,854/ and $9,708. My truck is in good shape, and I get compliments all the time on it. So my question is what price should I shoot for. I would like to get b/w 8-9 thousand for it, but should I ask for more or less than that? I have never sold a car before, but the more money I can get the quicker I can pay off the new car that I'm going to buy. I guess what I am asking is what price should I be aiming for after I have negotiated with someone??? There is one thing I want to mention, my bank (USAA) had the following values for my truck. Anyway, here are the Usaa and Edmunds specs.....Any help and advice would be appreciated

USAA BANK Suggested Retail Values* (based on condition) (Excellent) $11,750.00 (Good) $9,900.00 (Fair) $9,200.00 NA = no value available Trade-in Values* (based on condition) (Excellent) $9,195.00 (Good) $7,905.00 (Fair) $6,840.00 NA = no value available Mileage: 130000 Location: NE Standard and Optional Equipment: AT AC 8CY FLARESIDE

I think it really depends on your area and what others there are going for. The only one on Ebay that's got any bids is $4000. All the blue book estimates in the world aren't worth a crap if no one in your area wants one. You didn't mention options, trim level, engine and trans, mileage, 4x4 or

4x2 etc. but I'd be surprised if you can get more than about $5500 for it. BTW, why are you buying a ricer?

Edmunds and KBB are guidelines only. As others have said, you really need to look in your area and see what's out there and what's the selling price. Selling a used car nowadays is tough, because dealers are selling new cars at 0% financing or banks are offering prime -2 or better for home equity loans. That means that people can buy a new car far easier than they could, and for not too much more than a used car.

Which would you do, buy a used truck for 14K or a new one for 16K?

You're right in going the fsbo route, and you've done good research in figuring out the "list" price of your vehicle. Now you have to figure out the market value of the truck, price it a little bit over that to accomodate some haggling.
