98 Ranger Idle Problem

Hi, I am experiencing a problem with the idle of my 98 Ranger (4 cycl. man tns.). When I start it, the RPMs begin to slowly decrease to the point where I have to give it gas to prevent it from stalling. Through some carefull timing when releasing the clutch and pressing on the gas I can get it going smoothly. It runs normally until I stop again at a long light or something, then it requires a little finess to get it going again. I have seen some posts talking about the the throttle position sensor and idle air control valve. I am wodering if anyone else has experienced this.

My 99 Ranger does the same thing off and on. I start the engine and if it is acting up I shut off the engine, and I tap on the idle air control valve with the handle end of a screw driver, about three taps will do. Then it runs just fine. 100 dollars at Ford dealer for a new valve.

Last year my 1990 BroncoII did the same thing. Buy a can of intake cleaner, disconnect the air hose from the throttle body and spray the intake cleaner in it (with the engine running). If the IAC becomes stuck in the closed position, then when you have the throttle close you really will throttle (suffocate) the engine. Hence the need to hold the throttle open some to prevent stalling.
