Changing from automatic hubs to manual

I have a 1999 Ford F250 Superduty 4x4. It has the shift-on-the-fly automatic engaging 4x4 system. Long story short, it is broken. The current system has a fall back mode. The hubs have two positions, auto and lock. If I manually move them to lock and move the switch on my dash to 4x4 then I am in 4x4. But the mechanic says that these hubs are getting to be crap and should be replaced. He says I can replace my OEM auto hubs with a manual hub (the one with two positions, free and lock, Ford or Warn for example) and I will be fine. IE I will have to move the hubs by hand but the switch on the dash will still cause the 4x4 to engage. Is this going to work?

Thanks, Jeff

Yes it will work I did it a year ago. I just like to have manual hubs and the new Warns are a lot stronger then the auto hubs. Jim F.
