f-250 4x4 front wheel bearings

I have a loose wheel bearing on the left front of my f-250 4x4. My mechanic says the individual wheel bearings cannot be replaced but instead the entire hub assembly must be replaced for over $300! This doesn't make sense to me. Anyone else have any experience with this sort of problem?
