I changed to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in an M50D transmission in an Aerostar. The stuff that came out of it was thicker than the ATF, and colored like engine oil. The drain bolt magnet had about a 1/2" thick extension of steel filings. Could the gear oil have caused this damage or is this amount of filings normal? The oil had been in there for 40k to 45k miles.
Also, the shifter bore plugs appear dry, but oil was leaking from above, probably the shifter tower? Unless it was engine oil that dripped down.
And finally, it took way less than the supposed 2 4/5 qt. My pump didn't get some oil from the first two bottles, but after emptying the third one as much as I could, when I removed the pump nipple, ATF came gushing out.
Any experiences appreciated.
