Please Read-2003 Ranger 5sp Auto Trans Problem

Hello All,

I really need your help.. I bought a 2003 Ranger Edge Supercab 3.0 V6 with the Automatic in January of this year.. I have taken it in several times for a slip and pop in the transmission.. My sisters 04 does not do this and 3 friends 03s don't do this.. All are identical vehicles..

The slip happens when I am going 45 + (or so) then slow down because a light is red then it turs green before I come to a complete stop and I start to accellerate again.. It's almost like I'm pushing in a clutch the rpms go up and then all of a sudden I dump the clutch, theres a jump.. It's weird.. It also happens when I slow down to drop money in a toolbooth and keep going.. It's pretty sporadic, the dealerships can't get it to duplicate..

I have found one way to duplicate the problem.. From a parked position (you are in Park) put your foot on the brake, take the shifter and shift to 2nd then Drive in one motion, let off the brake and go. With my truck there is a 4 to 5 second (somtimes more) delay.. The truck starts to go but it acts like it's bogged down then jolts forward and accelerates normally.. My truck does that, but my sisters doesnt and my friends 03's dont.. My truck has been at the dealership for the past few days and they couldnt find anything (this was the 8th time in, they've already replaced the trans once). I went to the General Manager of the dealership and explained the problem then told him to get the keys to a new one on the lot and I would show him how the new one didn't do it but mine does.. Well we got some keys walked out to the 04 Ranger Edge thats almost identical to mine, I explain the process from shifting from park to 2nd to drive then let off the brake and drive normally.. I'll be danged the 04 DID IT TOO.. I looked like the biggest idiot ever. I wouldnt have demanded that he get the keys to one if I hadn't already done this test myself..

Is it possible that there was a bad batch of transmission components, some of these bad parts went in 03's some in 04's?

Please if you have a Ranger with the 5 speed auto transmission please try duplicating the problem (go from park to 2nd to drive let off brake and go.. see if you get the jolt) and post the results.. Good or bad.. I can't be the only one experiencing this problem, if there's a large scale issue we need to make this known to Ford so we're not driving down the road slow down for a light then speed back up and our transmission explodes with our kids inside..

Thank you for your help.. I greatly appreciate it..

I have also posted this on the Ford Truck World web site..

the ECM is seeing the signal that it is in '2' and trying to start off in second (normal Ford strategy, '2' is 2 and 2 only)

then it sees 'OD' and it drops into first

take it to a transmission shop that does a lot of trucks and check with them if it's 'normal or not........most dealer 'service managers' don't have a clue about how it should or does work

Thanks for the response.. I did that on the way home today.. The guy hooked a computer in and had me drive around and he watched it in real time.. It's takes the computer almost

5 seconds to tell the transmission "Oh! I'm in Drive.. SHIFT" Then it shifts. He agreed that it is a problem.. Anyone else have this issue??

I think it's more of a 'prevention' than a problem

it will keep you from shuttle-shifting it (rocking it)

I notice the late Mopar OD units have a 2-3 second delay built into re-engaging OD after you cancel it
