Re: Ford Fuel Filters / Carb Problem

Teflon tape works just fine with gasoline, but teflon tape is not needed on tapered pipe fittings, that's why the design is tapered, an interference fit to seal. Not only that but all it takes a small piece of teflon to come off and hold the float needle off its seat and its flooding. Sadly 99.5 percent of the time what you are describing is a split carb housing. Its a piss poor design, because the pot metal carb housing is softer and weaker than the fuel filter, and all of the manufacturers are guilty of using it. Helicoils will not work in this application because they wont seal. and I am not cross posting this ether

The carb is shot. Keep in mind the carb is on top the intake manifold which on top the hot exhaust manifold. Do you really want to chance a fuel leak in that location? Used carb from a salvage yard shouldn't be more than $25. Nasty autozone sells a Holly rebuilt for $119.00, which is better than the champion line of rebuilds by far. NAPA has carter rebuilds running from $149 to $164 Advanced Auto Parts has Holly from $89 to $127, plus a nasty Champion rebuilt for $118 In a pinch because the carb does have the filter mounting to the top cover, instead of the base like the 2bbls did, you could pull the top cover from a salvage yard, and swap them, if the needle and float are on the top cover swap them as well. But for less than $125, I would just replace the thing. The truck will probably run better and might even pick up a bit of fuel mileage. and with a 300cid 6 bang in '77 ford pick-up you need all you can get.
