Real Block Heater

Hi all, All the discussion on a improvised block heater has me thinking about a oil pan/block heater for my F-250 with a 5.4L gasoline engine. We use them for piston aviation engines all the time. They use much thicker oils.

My current climate does not really require one. However, I am planning on moving to a colder one in the next couple of years. I have looked in a few places on the Internet, however I have not found anything of use. I would like a permanent installation preferably one that can heat both the oil and block. If I have to buy a separate oil and block heater then I will.

Thanks for all your help, Michelle

to this page and then put - Magnet-mount - in the Keyword/item box lefttop and then GO.

About the 4th item down will be a magnetic mount heater that will work on any engine. You can stick it to the side of the oil pan, water jacket or anywhere convenient. Move it from truck to the tractor! ;-)

You really don't need one on a gas engine unless you are living in constant freezing temps or are actually using 50wt ashless aircraft oil..... But... if you want, you can go to your local autoparts store and get a block heater. You just need to know the size of the freeze plugs on the side of the engine. Once you get the heater, drain the cooling system (good time to check hoses, belts etc) and pop out the center freeze plug on either side of the engine and the heater just goes back in place of the plug. I don't (personally) like the oil heaters because they can overheat the oil and burn it. A good block heater will do all you need and should cost less then $40 in parts.

good luck, mark

If you're going to put in a block heater, go ahead and spring for the oil pan heater and battery pad. Just a few extra bucks, but well worth it.

Don't know why it's so much more in the US, but I just got a block heater from napa for $12CAD here in Calgary.

That is a slightly different animal. Guys on the dieselstop has said that the cord alone will cost better then $35 for that heater. Maybe you can get it from IH for less???
