Trailer hitch recommendation/advice?

Looking for a trailer hitch for my '93 F-150... having a hard time finding new or used. Options seem to be Draw-Tite for about $200 or "Quality-S" for about $120. Any opinions on either brand? Do either require drilling for my specific application or are they bolt-on? Anyone have one kicking around their garage that they just want to get rid of? :) Not looking for fancy, just something better than the (bent) step bumper to pull stuff with.

thanks,

Nate

Draw-Tite is reputable, no idea on that other one. I just order my trucks with the hitch from the factory.

There is always U-Haul. Luckily I have a good local independent shop that has been around for a long time that is cheaper and has good quality hitches.

Reese shows a bunch that will fit. Tractor Supply carries Reese for good prices.

Draw-tite and Reese are both quality hitches, most of the time they mount into pre-drilled holes in the frame

Of the two you mention, I like the DrawTite. Resse also makes a very nice product.

You might not expect it, but WalMart sells trailer hitches and the wiring stuff you need for the lighting system. If your bumper is bent up from dragging trailers around the landscape, then you are pulling far too heavy of a trailer.

Quality in Phoenix makes the ones JC Whitney sells.

I've got a Reese class III for my ranger that is a quality hitch. I got it used, via the "want ad", or uncle henrys, for $60. Straight up bolt-on, using bolts that are already in the chassis (and admittedly rusted on, and a b**** to get out). When I got it a year or so ago, I had at least 5 options used under $100. If you were closer I'd help you get one. However, I'm afraid shipping from NH to DC would negate any discount I may find in this area.

I am not impressed favorably with anything I've ever bought from JC Whitney. I shudder to think that people are dragging toy-box trailers around the highways and byways connected to a truck via a JC Whitney tow bar and ball.

I've had excellent luck with hitches from ETrailer.com -- Often you can pick out a model and download the instructions to see if drilling is required (or go to hitch manf's site and get them).

The Wal-Mart hitches are usually One-Size-Fitz-A-Lot and may be heavy or not the best fit for your truck, but the prices are good.

JC Whitney doesnt make anything. I have bought trailer hitches, sway bars, etc from them and they have always come from the same manufacturers that have been mentioned on this thread.

Maybe I have been just lucky, but I have found old JC to have been given undeserved bad publicity in the past.

ETrailer sold me a Hidden Hitch for my Ranger. Good price, bolted right on, and it's very low-profile, too.

Drawtite is an excellent brand. I've used them on three vehicles.

Thanks for the recommend, that's the first site that I've seen with direct links to installation instructions, which let me know what I'm getting into. Fortunately, I do have a pretty ballsy 1/2" drill and a selection of large size drill bits, because it looks like I'll need them.

I'm kind of leaning towards draw-tite and against quality-s simply because the latter doesn't have any kind of web site to speak of, any reason not to follow that plan? I have found some sites with the draw- tite hitches for a better price than I'd originally found.

If you are going to order online, don't forget to calculate the shipping in your total cost. As heave as they can be to ship, might not be much savings. And it is better to support your local business.

I also got a Hidden from eTrailer, and echo Pete's endorsement (hi Pete, good to see you here)
