Wheel studs sanpped!

Wow. I just got back from testing my mirrors, for dang sake, and I heard the weirest noise from the back. Crawled home.....

I've got one stud snapped off on the left rear, and two on the right rear.

I just got back from pulling home a 7K lb trailer, 100 miles. The back wheels are American Racing AL, new, and the nuts were torqued to 140lbs.

I had adjusted up the back brakes previously when I put new brakes on the front..........

Any ideas?

Thanks!

MM^^

Need a bit more info. What vehicle, what year? Lugs for 97-99 F150 should be torqued to 100 ft lbs. 00 up including the new models should be torqued to 150. F250 are I believe 150-165 ft lbs.

Sorry. It's a 94 F-250...........I think it's 140............ruined the new wheels. Second time. BTW........It appears that the new lug nuts (the chrome ones) bottomed out and didn't seat the wheels. Gotta change the studs now (if I can figure out how to take of the brake stuff). All of them are wasped. The first time the wheels were ruined was becasue the tire guy didn't use the long center cap for the Dan rear-end. Now it looks like he should have checked the nuts, too.

Damn, I'm lucky pulling that trailer. BTW, I almost had to kill the tire guy to replace the old rims he ruined. This time, I put them on myself, and should have checked them. I'm going to eat the cost of these........

Anybody think I should just forget about these wheels and get some steel ones.............It's been a nightmare.

Problem could be nuts or studs. Nuts may need more surface to avoid compressing aluminum. Studs may be 100-pounders. Ford had a lug nut recall in 1998. Details are below. HTH.

Rodan.

============================================== NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 98V095000

1998 FORD F250 WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS Recall Date: 05/13/1998 Potential Units Affected: 1520000

Summary: MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES AND LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. LUG NUTS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT CREATE SUFFICIENT CLAMP LOAD, ALLOWING WHEEL MOVEMENT IN RELATION TO THE HUB/ROTOR MOUNTING SURFACE.

Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN LOOSENING OF LUG NUTS, STUD FATIGUE FAILURE, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy: THE FIRST NOTIFICATION, BEGINNING MAY 1998, PROVIDES AN INTERIM REPAIR PROCEDURE. OWNERS OR THEIR DEALERS ARE TO VERIFY THAT LUG NUT TORQUE IS 100 LBS. THEN THE LUG NUTS MUST BE TIGHTENED AN ADDITIONAL 1/8 TO 1/4 TURN MORE.

THE SECOND NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN JULY 1998, WHEN PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEEL STUDS AND REPLACE THE WHEEL LUG NUTS. ______________________________________________________
