1988 olds, fuel pump or not????????

on my 1988 olds delta 88, 3800, 179k, it cut off without warning and everything went dead, battery and all. after jumping the car, it will run sometimes for a second and that's it. when i turn the key on, even with the jumper cables attached to give fire to the car, i do not hear the fuel pump humming like it used to. i also pushed the the thing that looks like an air valve stem, on top of the engine, and no gas came out of it. i hear that's a way to check the fuel pump, if gas comes out, the pump is working. does this sound like the fuel pump is bad? if it is bad, then why did it kill the battery instantly? also when i tried jumping it the first time, the battery had a burnt smell to it. thanks a lot.

Let's get one thing clear. The fuel pump did not cause the battery to die. From your description, you might have shorted cells in the battery, which would account for smells and about everything else. Based on this account, you would be best off to take it to a qualified mechanic rather than DIY.

Sounds like the ignition module or fuel pump went out, and over cranking to try to get it restarted killed the battery. If it runs for a sec then shuts off, it could be the MAP sensor too. Get a fresh charge on the battery, lay off the cranking, and get a good ECM testor to check the sensors.

the battery died the moment the car cut off the first time so there was no over cranking, the car was completely dead. i tried jumping it after it was completely dead and that is when it ran for a second and then cut off. thanks

I have had batteries to short out and stop everything, but I suspect you have a bad alternator.
