2000 cavalier trouble getting into gear

i have a 2000 cavalier and, especially when its cold, when i try to put it in reverse it takes a while to actually get into the gear. usually i can just put it into drive and then go back to reverse and
its fine. my question is is this a serious problem, i know i caused it by being a lil rough on the cav. and switching out of reverse while i was still rolling backwards. is this just an inconvience or do i need to do something about it. other than that i have no problems with it.
