87 Caprice left dash signal light

When the head lights are turned on, the left signal light in the dash comes on and stays on steady. When the signal lights are used the light will then flash normally. Checked bulbs and changed flasher. Any help as to were the short might be would be appriciated.

There is probably a poor ground connection near the tail/turn light socket. Tail light current can not get to its own ground near the lamp socket so it continues backwards through the turn light filament, then through the dash turn signal monitor filament and finally to ground.

Look for a ground wire from the light socket to the chassis, attached by a screw. Remove the screw, wire-brush the wire terminal and the mounting surface, and reattach securely.

Good Luck.

Had a similar problem, if fixing grounds doesn't help, you could have a shorted marker light socket. The socket got mashed, a new bulb only tightened the short. Snip one wire while trouble is present, if problem goes away, replace socket. Consider beefing up body grounds. Run jumper from block to frame, frame to header panel and cowl 25 year old El Camino with bright lights.
