Article on 1959 GM models.

The June 2006 issue of Collectible Automobile has a good article on the

1959 GM lineup and the men that designed them.

A few things I didn't know was that 1959 was the last year GM offered the Full Size auto's only lineup. [ except the Vette ].

1960 saw the addition of a mid-size car. The 1959's were supposed to be similar to the 1958's model's, which the designers hated at the time, but Harley Earl loved them. The more chrome the better, and 1959 was going to see even more chrome.

In 1957 some of the GM guys got a sneak peak at some of the 57 Chryslers and went ga - ga over them. When Harley went to Europe that year the boys at GM started to redesign the 59 models from idea's that were taken from Chryslers styling.

By the time Harley returned from Europe the drawings and clay models were done and all the other board members liked the designs for the 59 models and Harley had no say in the matter by that point.
