Actually you don't benefit from using gas with a higher octane rating than your car requires. The best thing you can do is make sure it's running as good as you can get it, tuned up, full gas tank and drive it for at least 20 minutes to get it to operation temperature.

Not so much requires, but can effectively use. A high enough octane for maxium ignition timing advance. Once you reach that point, going with a higher octane will not help. Charles

I thought the usual backyard trick was dumping a gallon of alcohol into a full tank of gas?

The only alcohol that should ever be added to a fuel system is Methanol. Also known as Racing Alcohol. Using other types can result is sever fuel system problems.

Some inbreeds and idiots add it for all sorts of reasons. Professions will add it to clean out carbon build up in emissions systems, and to lower NO levels. Charles

That is due to seals, and hoses. 3 gallons per full tank once every 3 years will not cause any harm. Other types of consumer alcohol will cause damage from one time usage.

Some newer vehicles are made to be bi-fuel. Methanol & Gasoline. even some 4 cylinder 1994 and up S-10's. Charles
