Intermittent starting- BuickCentury 2000

The past several months, we have experienced intermittent starting with above vehicle. Try to start- no result, no noise, no clicks. Try 20+ times. wait 20 minutes or so, starts no problem. Sometimes vehicle works fine for several weeks, and of course never malfunctions at the repair shop. Have replaced the starter, checked battery, connections etc. Quite frustrating. Any ideas?

Another possibility is the starter solenoid mounted on the starter itself. The contacts inside the solenoid can become burned over time and not make contact sometimes. After a few tries, they will finally make contact and it will start. Does it "click" when it won't start, or does nothing at all happen? If it clicks, it's most likely the starter solenoid.

To answer your question, Yes, the neutral switch can be adjusted. Look for a switch down at the bottom of the steering column near the floorboard. There should be wires in a harness running to it and the switch has slotted holes at either end with screws into the steering column jacket.

Next time it will not start, go down to the switch location, and DO NOT loosen the screws very much just a little and then move the switch a slight amount one way and then the other while trying to start after each movement. It should not take a very big movement to cause it to start IF that is the problem.

Hope this helps...
