Re: Help - 1988 Cadillac Deville (electrical question)

HI ROG, I STILL HAVE ONE 4.5 AND 2 4.9 CADS. YOU DIDN'T MENTION IF YOU HAD CHECKED TO SEE IF YOU WERE GETTING FIRE TO THE PLUGS. PUT AN OLD SPARK PLUG ON
ONE OF THE WIRES AND SEE IF IT SPARKS. IF IT DOES, YOU PROBABLY DO NOT HAVE AN IGNITION PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE NO SPARK, TAKE THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR OFF AND POSSIBLY REPLACE THE CONDENSER. ANOTHER THING IS THE ROTOR. IT MAY LOOK GOOD, BUT MAY NOT BE. I WENT ABOUT NUTS TRYING TO REPLACE EVERYTHING IN THE DISTRIBUTOR AND ALL I NEEDED WAS A NEW ROTOR. THE MODULE ALSO SOMETIMES NEEDS REPLACING. ANY KRAGENS, AUTOZONE, NAPA OR PEP BOYS WILL HAVE THESE PARTS. IF YOU HAVE SPARK,BUT STILL THE ENGINE DOES NOT START, CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE AT THE FUEL RAIL. THERE IS A CAPPED OFF PORT ON THE FUEL RAIL THAT YOU CAN ATTACH A HOSE FOR A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE. I USE AN OLD R12 AIR CONDITIONING MANIFOLD GAUGE SET TO CHECK THIS PRESSURE. HOOK UP THE GAUGE AND TURN THE IGNITION KEY A FEW TIMES TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY PRESSURE. THERE SHOULD BE A PRESSURE OF 9 TO 12 PSI. IF NOT, THE FUEL PUMP (MOUNTED IN THE FUEL TANK) MAY BE BAD. I HAD THIS SORT OF PROBLEM ON A 4.1L 85 CAD THAT 2 TRIPS TO A DEALER COULDN'T FIND. I FOUND IT WHEN THE FUEL PUMP FINALLY QUIT. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST; WHEN YOU GET IT RUNNING, ADD SOME OF THAT STUFF CALLED "MAKE IT PASS" FUEL ADDITIVE SOLD BY STORES NOTED ABOVE BEFORE YOU TRY TO GET IT SMOGGED. I ASSUME, SINCE YOU HAVE TO SMOG YOUR CAR TO GET DMV TAGS THAT YOU ARE IN CALIFORNIA; IF YOU ARE IN THE LA AREA AND NEED MORE ADVICE, YOU MAY CALL ME AT 323-772-1821---------PFI
