Starter problems please help

i have a 2000 gmc sonoma, starter went out a few days ago it would just click once whenever i tried to start it.i went and bought a refurbished one and it did the same thing. i took it apart to see what i had to replace if anything, now i cant get the top thing back on. it has the little pieces of medal and springs, i just cant get the springs to stay back so that i can put it on. anybody have any advice. somebody told me it could be the black battery cable, is that true? Thanks

You are going about this problem the wrong way. It sounds more like the battery or connections. Those should have been checked to start with. If you can put the rebuilt starter back together, put it back on the truck and save the old one or rebuild it yourself for the experience. You were probably going to need a starter soon anyway, even though that likely was not the reason for your immediate problem.
