Will push start. Someone said tap a metal bottom under clutch on floor which has worked but didn't know if was a coincidence. Any suggestions.

Could be a bad ground between the battery and the hull ground/engine ground,
To test take half of a set of jump cables ands connect between the negative battery and the engine block.
You can then repair the ground or jump a heavy cable between the negative and the block.
