97 Civic HX shift problems

My son just told me that he has to let off the gas to get his car to shift gears. It's an automatic, so that seems strange to me. Is there anything I can check, or any ideas of what it might be, before I take it to a shop to have it looked at? His car has about 108,000 miles on it. Thanks in advance.

Check the color, level, and smell of the tranny fluid. Wipe it on a peice of white paper. Refer to the Owner's Manual for the correct method of measurement. You could just change it yourself . . It's easy. Use ONLY HONDA fluid. Maybe that's the problem?

the hx automatic is cvt - continuously variable transmission. there are no shift points. if the revs change when you take your foot off the gas, it's because it's changing ratio, but that's not a "shift" in the traditional sense. if it works at all, you're probably fine.

Curly,

The fluid looks and smells just fine. Actually, the fluid is a nice pink color so maybe it was changed shortly before he bought it. The level looks good also.

I just drove the car in town and on the Interstate and didn't notice any problems. His friends probably told him something was wrong and he panicked. I'll keep an eye on things. Thanks for the oil tip.
