1988 trooper AC

1988 Trooper 2.5 - 4 cylinder engine. My AC compressor won't engage. Mechanic at service station says it has plenty of freon (r12) and that it is an electrical problem. I checked the compressor wire and it looks OK. There is an AC relay in the fuse box - could this relay be defective? How could I test this relay?? Does anyone know if there is any other fuse that might affect the AC compressor?? Thanks for any help!!

there

the relay is a possibility, usually you can find another one just like it in the relay panel, just swap with another one and see if the problem moves to another system. you might also take a look at the low pressure swithch, on my rodeo it is screwed into the top of the receiver drier, on some vehicles it is in the low pressure hose (the largest diamater of the 2 aluminum lines) it should have a 2 pin connector plugged on to it, just pull the connector off, and jump a wire across the 2 pins in the connector, if the switch is causing the problem, the compressor will come on...
