Diesel POWER from those old Isuzu engines? Funny.

You'll get a few mpg's better, but that's all for a high mileage engine, assuming you'd find one.

Anyway, only the 2.3 and 2.6L gassers bolt to the tranny you have.

Buy a head from AMC and be happy. Or get a later 2.6L head with the beefier casting.

Those 2.2L engines were Point A to B engines, not haulers. 50hp/80tq from an N/A engine and about 80hp/120tq from a turbo version was not the tow monster of choice. As I mentioned, they might run forever, but knowing that most of them are nearly 20 years old and original...good luck finding parts for them. Diesels wear out, too.

Hmm.. maybe he could import one of the newer Isuzu common rail diesels for Troopers until 2002, 160hp 3L. Fast and tough. But it'll be a hassle getting it to fit, better to just import the whole truck if you really want a reliable diesel Trooper that'll last for 300k miles. Not cheap either..
