S Type misfire after car wash

about 4 months ago i left my 1999 3.0 s type in an outdoor car park for 2 weeks whilst on holiday. on return the car developed a misfire that got slowly better but never quite dissapeared although it was easy to ignore. this week i washed the car in a car wash and the misfire is back again - it has happened before after a car wash but dissapeared quite quickly. any ideas on what this is and how to fix, i can only presume it is damp/water in something ??

Cheers

Hi Simbad,

It was / is water that's got to one of the coil packs for the plugs, as you stand looking at the engine from the front If I remember correctly its the right hand bank of coils under the plastic cover that get affected.

Water on the early S-Type gets in via the wiper / rain tray below the windscreen and follows the cable run into the engine bay.

Hi Simbad,

Yeah you need to find out what coil or plug is affected and replace it, as for a cure all's I can suggest is to soak the wind screen with a hose and lift the bonnet to see if you can see were the water come's in, once you know the route in use some silicone sealant.

I have a late 2000 S-Type and I have not had this problem after Hosing down the car so I don't know if they did a redesign/mod to the rain tray.

I have not used a Car wash as I like to do it my self that way I get to know were all the scratches are or were any new ones appear due to careless shoppers etc. Sad I know but I like to know.

oh and i understand about the home wash thing, i have only put it through a car wash twice in 2 years for exactly that reason.

I dont believe that I'm reading this one - I remember having a Cortina once that wouldn't start when it got wet, but your talking about an S type Jag here with a list price of £30K.

No wonder Jag keeps teetering on the edge of bankruptcy !!!
