XJS Speedo Drive

On the rear of my diff is a speedo drive - This is an electronic sensor with a wire going up into the boot.

Does anyone know if this sensor serves any other purpose other than running the speedo, for example, does it run any part of the engine management system ?

No. It only sends a pulse to the speedometer.

Why thinking of doing away with that sender?

Yeh, I'm having real problems getting hold of a replacement Powerlock diff and dont feel 100% happy about putting my old one back on as its packed up once before.

I know that every XJS model I come across in the scrap yard has got the standard diff so the speedo drive must come from the back of the gearbox. Do you know if Jag used the same gearbox with the powerlock diff as with the non powerlock - As if they did then the speedo drive might be accessable on the gearbox ?

Stu,

I think many different gear ratios were used by Jag. I can get you individual parts or a complete spool section if you so desire.

Power-loc is a Dana limited slip diff found in many trucks and off road vehicles. The last time I did a differential I took all the bearings and shims to a local bearing house and they said "Oh, thats a Dana 44 in that case. Here's a bearing kit." Everypart from their kit was correct. Sounds like you need a clutch kit and they dont cost much either.

Let me know.

I've looked at the price for a new clutch set from David Manners Jags in Birmingham - Who is as cheap as anyone around in this country ...

RTC 1349 x 4 @ £35.60 each = £142.40 RTC 1416 x 4 @ £23.50 each = £94.00 RTC 1350 x 2 @ £43.60 each = £87.20 Total price is £ 323.60, or at current exchange rates $575.68

Which is a silly price in anyones book for a few steel disks belonging to a

15 year old car. I think I might have found one locally though - Just in the negotiation stage !!!

Ok Stuart,

I can purchase a DANA 44 Power Lock kit for $40.57 US dollars. Thats all friction disks, plates, and Belleville Disk. All new and made by DANA. (Jag original)

For you that would be 22.7857 GBP.

I tell you, I cant stand the crooked ways of parts suppliers for Jaguars. I know they buy these kits, break them down and resell them for GOLD. A complete bearing kit is about the same.

Interested? Email me and I can ship these to you.
