05 TJ steering wheel grind noise

OK. So While I wait for a friend to come over to assist with finding out what is wrong here. How about you guys take a guess.

05 TJ. When the steering wheel is moved (even when car not running), the front underside makes a click click noise when I move the steering wheel 3 niches to the right and 3 inches to the left. The sound makes a short light grinding sound when actually driving very slow when making a turn to left or right. Almost like threading on a bolt moving/stripping back and forth.

Went under there and gave everything a nice hard shake but didn't see anything moving. Of course, until I can get my friend to move the steering wheel, I can only hear it not see it.

I'm thinking loose track bar or maybe my pitman is worn ?

Anyway, thanks for reading.

The squeaky wheel gets the most grease. Do you think it's telling you something? God Bless America, Bill O|||||||O mailto: snipped-for-privacy@billhughes.com

Ok, so after checking the entire front end for anything loose. I didn't find anything loose. Drag link, tie rods, dampner, track bar, etc, nothing.

Sounds like it is coming literally from the steer shafts from the rear of the firewall to the steering box. In fact the one closest to the box is slightly rusted. I guess I should just spray some lube on there, and hope for the best?

It sounds like you may be writing about the universal joints on the shaft between the steering column and box:

I would justsquirt oil at it in various positions so as it would soak into the joints, then wipe off the excess. Unless, it has an zerk fitting for grease likeReal Jeeps. God Bless America, Bill O|||||||O mailto: snipped-for-privacy@billhughes.com

Yep. The ujoint nearest the box are rusted up. And you are correct, no zirc. haha! Thats what I am going to try tomorrow while I have some light to play.

Thanks. That was one of the first things I checked. They were on tight, and I had suspected they might be loose as I recently put on a box skid plate.

Lets hope some oil on the ujoints makes it happier.
