1987 XJ 4.0L Headlight problem

I have an 87 Cherokee and am having quite a bit of difficulty to track down a problem with my headlamps. Currently, the headlights, stop lights, parking lights, dashboard lights, hazard flasher and dome light do not operate (the turn signals are working).

I got out a multimeter and have checked the fuse panel. None of the fuses are blown. However, there is no power (12V) on either side of these fuses. In addition, if I remove the fuse, the hot side of the fuse (side that should be connected to the battery), is a dead short to ground.

Any suggestions where to start looking next or a possible cause for this ?? I am considering the headlight switch. Wish I had a good schematic for the electrical system!

Thanks in advance for any advice, Seth Hubbard

It should/could be a bad fusible link, if so equipped, near the battery. Should be red or green as per my diagram, but it also claims the fusible links are AFTER the starter relay NOT the starter solenoid. I have a 1988 XJ wiring diagram on a pdf file. It is time to probe for the electrical shortage starting with all of the positive wires from the battery and going to the headlight switch.

just some ideas! later and good luck, dave AKA vwdoc1

Seth Hubbard did pass the time by typing:

Only to start at the battery and work toward the bulbs.

Battery -> headlamp switch (internal breaker) -> headlamps

My "guess" is your headlight switch has bit the farm.

Thanks! Could you send me an e-copy of the pdf? The 88 diagram should be similar to 87, and at least it give me something to work from.

If you follow the red wire from the battery, one will end at a bolt in the power distribution module. At this bolt you will find a couple 8" or so pieces of soft wire that have a big rubber crimp tube on the end where they hook to the harness. The piece from the bolt to the crimp is the fuse link.
