1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Tempermental FM Radio Reception

Dear All, I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The first chrysler/jeep radio which was an AM/FM cassette player worked well for awhile until the FM station cut out and intermittently cut back in. I subsequently replaced it with another radio obtained from a used vehicle junk yard that had AM/FM/Cassette and CD Player, the latter which was also tempermental as well. The replacement radio' FM worked well for awhile and then started cutting out. Once in a while it will come on and then cuts out and does not come back until days later. When I press the scan button realizing it has decided to act up again, the can function continues but never locks in on an FM station unless it feels like it on one of my "lucky days". This is annoying as I have recently purchased an ipod and hooked up the FM transmitter but most times cannot enjoy it because of the FM function irregularity.

Question: Should I replace the radio? It seems strange that I would have the same problem with the first and second radios. Could it be the antenna and if so, among you experts out there what should I do?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Best regards. Tom McKnight

No suggestions, just chiming in to say I've the same issues with the stock radio in my 95 XJ.

I don't listen to the FM much anyway, so it's not a big problem for me. I play MP3's through a cassette adapter and the player has FM in case I somehow get bored of the 800+ songs on it ;-)

If you find the underlying problem, please let us know.

It is indeed odd that you would have the same problem with two radios in a row. That is why I would suspect a bad antenna or ground connection. What sort of antenna is it, whip, electric or windshield?

I don't know about that Earle. Our 88 has a replacement 'Jeep' brand radio also doing the same thing, same for our 87. New antenna also.

I don't think they can make a decent FM radio. The AM works fine.

A friend had a car that had weird radio problems so I just ran all new wires for everything, speakers, power, etc. Then again it was an aftermarket radio
