1997 Wrangler Problem....

Hello all. I recently had a Pro Comp Stage II 4 inch suspension lift installed on my 1997 Wrangler. Now, when I accelerate, I feel a bumping noise underneath my feet. It only happens upon innitial acceleration and is worse when on an incline. I took it to my local repair shop and they are stumped. They checked the u joints and they were fine. They removed each drive shaft and the mechanic said with the rear shaft removed, that he didn't feel the bumping anymore. It did this a little before the lift kit but now it's really bad. It seems worse when I turn left upon acceleration. Any idea's? Thanks in advance.

The drive shaft is binding.

The lift has altered the angle of the pinion shaft relative to the angle of the tcase uptput shaft. These two shafts need to be parallel, not pointed at eash other. The corrective action is to lower the tcase (the parts should have been included with the lift kit), or raise the pinion, or a combination of the two.

Did you install SYE and new drive shaft? That's pretty much the same behavior mine had with a 2" lift before I lowered the transfer case. It was always worse on an incline.

4" lift kits always seem to >Hello all. I recently had a Pro Comp Stage II 4 inch suspension lift

It did come with a transfer case lowering kit. Maybe needs to be lower? Thanks so much for the reply. I truly appreciate it.

Thanks everyone! Thanks for the emails too. I got it up on a lift today and we think we can fix it for now by lowering the transfer case a bit more. I truly appreciate all of your help. Thanks!

Lower control arm links are loose. Tighten.

Correction: rear driveshaft binding, like everyone else said.

It was the drive shaft for sure. We lowered the transfer case a bit more and it's way better now. Looks llike I'll need to get a "beefy" new drive shaft. Is this a difficult thing to order? What should I look for? I have a 4 inch suspension lift with 33 inch tires. Thanks again to everyone for all the help and emails! ;-)

I'm glad you found the cause and were able to correct it (your rear driveshaft binding).

HOWEVER, I will chime in with the lower control arm posters, though, to say that if you get thunking when FIRST starting to accelerate or decelerate later on, it is also VERY likely it is your rear lower control arm bushings. I originally had a ProComp Stage II 4" lift myself. Got when thunking noises when accelerating/decelerating/engaging clutch after shifting, etc., replaced those poly bushings on the rear lower control arms, and it was 100% better.

By the way, if you go off-road much and disconnect your front swaybar at all, you will do yourself a favor to switch to flexible control arms. Those stiff ProComp POS arms will tear off a control arm mount under regular wheeling in short order (speaking from first-hand experience here).
