86 CJ7 Stall Problem

Hey - Got a question for all of your gearheads out there that my local mechanic shop can't seem to diagnose... I have an 86 CJ7. Excellent mechanical shape. Recently, I started having a problem, where the engine would just die - usually when I was reducing speed and coming up on a red light or making a turn. It started to get a little more frequent, so I first replaced the fuel filter. Then, I replaced the fuel pump. Then, I took the carb in (Holley) and had it rebuilt (it needed it anyway). I've also replaced the Ignition Control Module. NONE of these have fixed the problem. Now, after the vehicle has been running for about 10 minutes, it will "bog down" - it will just start to decrease in power until it stalls. If I push the clutch in and rev the gas pedal, it will sputter and choke. To get it restarted, I'll have to wait a few minutes at least before it will start (turns over fine, just won't start). The vehilce will idle all day long without a problem. It only is a problem under load. I was told by the carb guy that it may be the "sock" in the gas tank (clogged). My mechanic tells me No. In looking in Chilton's, it ssays it may be a vacuum leak, although the mechanic is telling me no to this as well.....Any thoughts?!?! I'm fresh out of ideas! Help!!! When was the last time you changed the air filter on the gas tank vent?

A plugged one will cause your symptoms by putting a vacuum on the gas tank.

The air filter is a couple bucks and is located on the bottom of the charcoal canister. It is a real bugger to change the first time, it is press fitted in and will likely need to be dug out. I needed a hammer and chisel on mine...

I check the canister filter by driving with a loose or off gas cap. If the problem goes away, bingo.

There have been many trips home for me with a loose gas cap after 'playing' in the local mud pit.

A plugged filter does the sweetest imitation of running out of gas you ever want to see...
