'97 Cherokee noisy 4wd

I put the Cherokee into fulltime 4wd for the first time today and it makes an intermittent drivetrain noise. Can't really describe it - I suppose a sort of rumble/road noise. It did it once when turning right and at other times it just came and went. When I went back to

2wd it stayed in neutral, and also stayed in neutral when I tried to re-select 4wd. I stopped and reversed and it then went back into either 2wd or 4wd fine, but the intermittent noise is still there.

I've had 4 new tyres fitted today, so the wheels should all be the same size ;)

I doubt that the previous owner rarely, if ever, selected permanent

4wd or even played with the lever. What servicing should I do, and any idea on the noise?

It stayed in neutral with the shift lever moved?

Ouch.

That implies something internal to the full time diff.

I was in 2WD and I moved to permanent 4WD OK (whilst driving). I then went back to 2WD since the 4WD was noisy and lost any drive. No drive in either 4wd or 2wd. I stopped and reversed OK then it went into drive OK.

Ouch again, I did read that right...

I hope that is something in the design, but hitting and staying neutral when the shifter has moved is not a good thing at all......

Hopefully someone here knows more than I about them.
