97 ZJ 5.2 V8-- High Idle @ Start Up

Greetings,

If i stop and start it a couple of times it settles down to a reasonable level-- some mornings it will jump up and stay at over

1500rpm-- i can pump the throttle but to no avail-- it has to be restarted to cure it. The high idle can show up anytime.

I replaced the TPS, but still happens. ( I did replace IAC, TPS, MAP, CCV and the one beside the MAP sensor last year. So the sensors are only 12 months sold) I also took off the TB last year and completely cleaned it. I had it idling smoother than the day it rolle doff the line.

I did replace the TPS last week but it still has problem. I did pull the IAC and it was clean.

My next move was to try the MAP sensor-- maybe the little hose has split or something.

It doesn't happen all the time, but something is not right.

Any tips appreciated

thx, james

Our Cherokee used to do that and it was the 'connection' on the TPS. Chrysler told us back in 98 we needed a new TPS, I told them where to shove it and cleaned the connection. We drove that TPS for almost another 10 years with it needing a connection clean with spray electronic contact cleaner every couple years.

Thanks MIke,

I will try that today-- I saw in another post that WD-40 was ok to use as contact cleaner, how do you feel about that? I don't mind buying "real" contact cleaner-- but I got lots of WD kicking around.

I have used WD40 in a pinch on mine, but the job didn't last. The contact cleaner seemed to do the better job.

I also used dielectric grease on the sealing skirts of the plug to help keep it clean.

Thansk Mike,

Success - I got some contact cleaner and sprayed the TPS connector a couple days in a row. For 10 days now I have had no problems-- the idle has smoothed out and the fast idle on startup has ceased.

One last question regarding the dielectric grease-- do you just spread it on with a qtiip around the inside of the skirt ? Also what about the face of the TPS connector ?

I just use it around the skirt. It shouldn't interfere with the connection itself, but it is a non conductive grease.

Dielectric grease is supposed to be used on the rubber seals on connectors. It is not intended to be used on pins. Of course a connector without a rubber seal should not be used in an 'exterior' application, either.
