Air Circulation in 95 Cherokee

Is the air circulation system in a 95 Cherokee "always fresh air" or "always recirculated"?

I ask because a: there isn't a control for this like in other vehicles I've owned, and b: the AC blows OK (cool to cold) when the outside temp is below 80 degrees or so, but if it's hotter than 90 - 95 degrees out, I get cool to warm air from the AC. One friend says that AC's can only do so much, and it's probably trying to bring down the temp of the 95+ degrees outside air.

My compressor seems to cycle appropriately... I bought a recharge kit, followed the directions, but got no improvement after emptying the

18oz can. The gauge that came with the kit would show in the middle of the low range when the compressor was off, but jump to the middle of the OK range when it came on.

Now an AC shop says I've probably over charged the HIGH pressure side and should expect it to fail soon... They want $65 to test it (foldable into the inevitable repair cost).

Am I expecting too much from the AC or should it be able to blow ice cold in 95 - 100 degree weather?

TIA

My experience with 93 and 96 XJs is that the AC system is undersized and unable to do more than _cool_ hot outside air even when in the best of repair.

System leaks, yielding less-than-frosty delivery, are to be expected in a

14 year old XJ. My own experience is that the evaporator at the radiator goes first, followed by the compressor. The condenser in the dash will leak, eventually. Professional repair of that will come in at just under a grand.

My completely non-expert observation from conversations here is that overcharging the AC is a fairly common do-it-yourself problem.
