Anybody using an iPod yet?

Just curious if anyone is using an iPod and the FM transmitter to play music in their jeeps? I'm thinking I want something along the lines of an iPod instead of satellite radio. Then I can take it and play it in any vehicle using the FM transmitter. Then I can put a cheaper head unit in my CJ as well.

Downloading all my CD's to it would be great, also downloading MP3's. I mean WOW.... 10,000 songs! Even if a CD averages 15 songs, you could get over 650 cd's on it.

Anybody bought one yet?

Yeah they are nice. I have a 40 gig model I just bought and i'm working on loading it up with tunes now. Haven't got the FM transmitter yet but I hear the best one it the iTrip from Griffin. They are about $30 from CompUSA and other places.

If you want to try and get a free iPod, try this place:

Just make sure you sign up with a Yahoo or Hotmail email, they will spam the shit out of you. Most people recommend the Ancestry.com offer, since it involves no money and they have a toll free number to cancel the service. I got my girlfriend to do that one. It is legit, a bunch of people at flyertalk.com's forums did a 'conga line' on this site and a bunch of people got their iPods. I need one more person to get my free 20gig model, which I will turn around and sell to help pay for the 40g one I bought. I'll knock $99.99 of retail for someone on RAMJ+W if you want to be the last referral for me. That's $200 for a 20gig iPod instead of $299.99. Othewise it's going on greedBay for $250 buy it now.

And then the damned thing could get stolen, run over or simply malfunction. I much perfer removable, seperate media, as you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

I have one. 15gb 3rd gen. Having used other hdd players, I can safely say there's a reason Apples player is the most popular.

I use an adapter which turns the CD changer input in the back back of my stock 2003 head unit into an aux input. Cost $70, sounds and works WAY better than any FM transmission ever will (trust me, I've tried it).

That's the one I bought. I'm never going back to FM of any kind. n.

I really like my iPod.

I've got a 3rd Generation, 20 GB iPod and the FM transmitter (iTrip). I haven't "ripped" all of my CD's to the PC yet, but it's already amazing to have access to a large % of my CD's. The iTunes software is nice because it autmatically "updates" the iPod with anything new each time I plug it into the computer.

The FM transmitter works fine for me (in fact, we now also take the iPod on long trips in the SUV because a CD changer with "only" 6 CD's now seems like a limitation!). I've heard that some people have problems with FM interference, so the best option would be a direct connect, etc.

Yeah what he said. Your files are safe at home on your computer, as are your CDs that you ripped to your player that likewise won't be getting scratched, stolen, or damaged in any way. Many eggs, many baskets. Don't be such a party pooper.

I have something like that on my Alpine head unit. It also uses the cd changer connector. I'm using that for my Sirius tuner right now though. Maybe i'll switch back to the Sirius' RF modulator and use it as an input for the iPod instead.

I'm on my 2nd iPod - I highly recommend it.

It is great. Its like having a radio station that only plays music you like.

Which is easier to carry - an iPod that's smaller than a pack of cigarettes or several hundred CDs? And even if it should get stolen, I have insurance and my CDs at home.

I agree! I used an Irock! transmitter for awhile with my RCA Lyra player, but then I got a back input and it's way better. The Jeep is just too loud for any static to be acceptable.

Thanks guys, I will definately look into a head unit with the aux input instead of the FM. Maybe I'll still get the FM for my XJ instead of replacing the stock head unit in that though.

Aux input is the ideal method, but I have both an iTrip and a cassette adaptor. The iTrip (or iRock - works just as well, but requires batteries) is pretty handy for when you travel - you can listen to your music on any clock radio, boom box, someone else's car, home stereo, etc. Its well worth the price tag, even if you do opt to use a direct input in your primary car.

If you can get your hands on a stock 2003 head from a TJ (might be a trick to get it into your CJ), you can get the adapter I got that changed the CD changer input to an aux. input. I've used a few FM transmitters and now that I'm "hardwired", I'll never go back. n.

I thought it was intresting, BMW now has an IPod cable hard wiered in from the factory, and you can control the IPod from the stock stering wheel controls, Have not played with it, not in the market for a BMW just thought it was neat.

I have an iTrip FM transmitter than I use with an iPod all the time. HOWEVER, while it works great in my car it barely works at all in my fiancee's car. We live in an urban area and it is virtually impossible to find free stations to set it to... so be wary of that, depending on where you live. Works really great with my home stereo system, too. Highly, highly recommended.

Here are some newer, completely different conga lines to check out if anyone is interested. They have between 1-5 people in line for each, and a unique feature of these 4 conga lines is that you may sign up for using a referral from one line, but request to be placed in a different conga line if you already have an established account that you'd prefer to put in line. For example, sign up for the new freehandbags site using a referral from the conga site, but have your older freeipods account added to the freeipods conga line. Everything is explained at the sites below:

Don't have an iPod, but I'm absolutely happy with my TriPod! Works almost everywhere, unlike my MonoPod. Highly, highly recommended.
