DIY Painting a TJ, or not DIY painting a TJ

Hi,

I have a couple of scrapes and nicks on my 97 TJ. I have been thinking of getting it repainted. The first quote for the left front fender, left door and minor grill area was for $350. They also quoted me $1250.00 for the whole jeep. With that thought, it is a jeep. I purchased the Jeep from the

1st owner in private sale. The original color was White and the 1st owner had it repainted dark green (metallic), no code number for the new paint. I have done plenty of bumpers, and under parts with spray cans with black paint.

Looking at the cost of compressors, spray nozzles, and car port canopies... I figure I could buy a new compressor (4 hp with at least a 8 gallons reserve, 120psi), air regulator/filter, a ¼ in hose, air spray gun, a small portable canopy with 3mil plastic all around, spray mask, and paint for less than $350.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. Where do I find local (Houston, TX) company that matches and sells paint for autos?

  1. Am I crazy for thinking I can do this, any thoughts?

Thanks,

Paul snipped-for-privacy@houston.rr.com

If you're painting your first auto, paint it yellow. It hides screw-ups better than any other color you can use. There's a good reason you see so many cars painted eye-sucking yellow at car shows. Any other color, and you'd see how much the body panels look more like tacos than car parts on a lot of them.

Good luck, - JJ

If you end up having someone else do it I know some good painters here in Houston that have done work for me

I agree. Took my 94 XJ to MAACO. Wouldn't recommend them to my worse enemy. Runs, flaking, chipping, etc.

If you are not shooting the modern basecoat-clearcoat hi solids shit you do not need the top feed gun. Period.

A regular garage will work and dust is controllable with the old line tools like mops and properly rigged shop-vacs. You do not need to spend $25K. Hire the neighbor kid to clean out the gearage.

The best paint for beginners is John Deere or IH tractor paint. The colors are easy to match and not unattractive. Price is right. A small amount of isocyanate hardener is added for a diamond-cutter auto grade finish.

A lot of people paint a car (an old beater car) as practice for painting a homebuilt or restored airplane. Before Lettuce-Ass from Canada says anything...you can use a Jeep too. Or the ramp tug (which could be a Jeep in drag with a tow bar and a factory diesel so it will burn Jet Fuel.)

Ya never heard of Romain lettuce?

I think they had Isuzu or Mits engines. Top speed was like 25 mph as they were geared really, really low. Almost any diesel will burn JP-5, which is Jet A, if the fuel pump will handle the low lubricity. Probably they specified a hardened pump (although the Euro low sulfur diesel has exactly the same lubricity spec as JP-5) or maybe told 'em to put in a little 30 weight oil. I have run MBZ diesels on Jet A for years and never tore up a pump but I usually added either outboard oil or Power Service.

Ted, Ted Ted, Your so funny, it is a joke, levity, humor, a snicker doodle, but since you took it so seriously get yourself a paint roller, a roller pan and a sash brush, buy some highway yellow and have at it. Oh, take some Prozac to help the nervousness.

In Maine there's an entire fleet of delivery vans painted JD Yellow. It was cheaper than the green apparently... They used actual tractor paint and the quality was....well, as good as a bread van gets. I believe it's fully auto quality paint.

Ah ok you mean Mike Romain Lettuce-ass.. Not to sure he is into doing the vegetable thing. lol Yes I know JP-5 is almost the same a diesel, I work with JP-5 quite often, and know many people who burn sumped JP-5 in their diesels. Just never have seen a diesel J**P before, let alone one which is burning JP-5. be even cooler if it was burning JP-5 with at JT-8 :)

Tractor paint is like a secret. It's a high quality paint that's half price or less than the regular automotive product of the same type...the catch is that the color choices are limited.

There are actually two John Deere greens, the older classic one which is a darker one, that was in fact often used as British Racing Green by Brit road racers and American MG and Triumph car owners for years, and the modern lighter one. They are compatible paints meaning they can be mixed for color adjustment if you want something in between. There is one ag yellow and I'm told it's compatible, should you want the resulting color, and a construction equipment yellow on which I'm not sure. There is also, a third green which is for the outsourced Sabre line of lawn equipment. My guess is it's not compatible, but it's a nice color.

International Harvester has red. The old Ford stuff was blue but I don't think it's an auto grade formulation:it's closer to Rustoleum.

The above is the actual stuff sold by JD and International dealers, NOT third party products sold at farm-supply places. These are definitely NOT auto grade: they're better for barns and rusty farm junk.

well, I am partially colour blind...(red green issues)....

but, if you mix green and yellow....don't you get a colour that resembles PUKE?! haha
