Failed emissions on 83 CJ7. Any suggestions?

Failed Emmisions on my 83 CJ7 258 and weber carbed and air bypass crap removed

Failed to CO test standard is 3.78 and mine was 3.88 at 25 mph (high speed test)

Failed to CO test standard is 2.79 and mine was 3.99 at 15 mph (low speed test)

Where do I look to fix this?

It already has a new cat and I drove the thing for 30 minutes to get it warm before getting it tested.

I got home and cleaned my air filter, adjusted the idle mixture screw and advanced my timing a bit.

Anything else I can try before going back a giving it another shot?

TIA, Ted

forgot to mention, my choke was not opening but about a 1/3 of the way also. That is now corrected.

If the choke was doing that when you tested, that is likely the cause of your failure. Otherwise, a carb overhaul is likely going to be necessary to get the mixture where it belongs. Don't waste money on plugs or wires or anything like that. This is strictly a fuel mixture problem.

Thanks Bill. The only problems I had were the CO readings. Everything else was fine. Or, so I am assuming. They didn't tell me anything else was wrong.

I get one free recheck, Keeping those fingers and toes crossed!!

Something real simple and cheap is to put a bottle of the stuff used to help pass emissions, you can get from the auto parts store. It really works since you have a CO problem. What it basically does is add both oxygen and a clean burn additive which makes your engine lowers the CO and NOX. Just follow the directions on the bottle.

True, strictly a rich burn condition. But, plugs are probably fouled. Going to change them before I get rechecked today.

My buddy used something called emissions pass that he got from the parts store and it worked great.

Just returned from retest and passed.

Aside from fixing the choke and cleaning the K&N filter, I changed oil, plugs and dumped 24 OZ. of Isoprpyl Alcohol into the tank. Drove it hard for about 15 minutes before getting it inspected. My CO levels dropped to

0.0 on both test.

Woo Hoo!!

ETOH sounds like a good idea - I would think that ethyl or methyl would be a better choice - but does anybody know if there might be a problem with any part of the fuel system. I remember hearing about issues with floats, seats, etc on carbs when "ethanol" was popular a while back. I have also heard that most of the new vehicles can handle ETOH - but have heard other rumors & propaganda about NMT 10%.
