Fender Flares

Does any one have any advice on fender flares? I have 35's under my YJ and need to put on some flares, 6" or better. Any advice is appreciated.

Hah! Fender flares on a YJ? Ask me, I've done 'em all! Skiny one, fast ones YJ ones, sorta YJ ones, and now the third set of TJ flares. If I haven't torn them up, or torn them off, they don't exist. ;-)

IMHO, the best flares for a YJ are stock TJ units, provided you're not worried about tread coverage. TJ flares open up the wheelhouses and give you the increased wheel travel capability akin to a 1" body lift.

If you must have total tread coverage Warn makes 6 and 7" versions. Bushwacker also has some new 6" flares for YJs that require the same type of wheelhouse clearancing the TJ flares do. Probably get the same benefits, and they may have templates, etc. with theirs that eliminate some of the guesswork when it comes to cutting the fenders & tu.b I'm not too fond of the way the Bushwackers look, but to each his own.

FYI, when I converted my YJ to TJ flares I initially installed Warn 6" units. They were total crap, different profiles sisde to side and not at all like the factory flares. Also, they were smaller width on the right than on the left. The Warn folks say that's been corrected now, but you may want to look at a set of them first.

I just installed the Bestop flares on my CJ, and they turned out great. They easily cover the tires, their little "mud-bulge" at the bottom of the front flare actually helps (a little) keep chunks from landing in your lap. They are much stronger than I thought they could be. I leaned the right rear against a tree pretty hard (left front off of the ground) and they hardly got scratched. A similar stunt tore a chunk off of the stock flare a while ago. I don't know about your YJ, but they sit about an inch higher all the way around on the CJ rear end, and should let me trim back the fenders for a bit more clearance and less tire rub. Besides, they are a heck of a lot cheaper than the Warns and some of the other brands.

My $0.02....
