Ford 8.8 Dino Gear and not Synth

Well.. I found out today that I had put 85w-140 gear oil in my Ford 8.8 when I found a tag that had broken off that says to use Synth 75w-140 only on it.. I only put 200 miles on the rear diff... When I had opened it up everything looked fine.. The ring gear didn't even show any signs of wear... I am just wondering about the bearings or seals... Did I totally mess up this rear diff or am I ok.... Would it be ok to run reg dino lube or should I use the synth stuff...

Thanks,

Ben

I would use what is called for. They might have the tolerances really tight and need the lighter fluid.

At least it isn't something that needs changing often.

Both 85W-140 and 75W-140 run at the same exact 140 viscosity when when warmed up. That it ran with 85W when it was warming up instead of the very slightly thinner 75W viscosity is no big deal unless the weather where you live has been below zero and even then, it would not be anything to worry about. No problem, they're not as fussy on their viscosities as engines are.

Yeah.. I live in South Carolina so if it gets that cold here.. people would freeze to death.. LOL.. Yeah.. I didn't think it would have hurt anything.. But I just wanted to make sure... I am going to put what it calls for back in it just to be on the safe side.. Thanks for the info

It should be fine. Since you emptied it already, fill it with the spec oil.
