Front Differential Fluid Change - Liberty

Hi All,

I'm new to this group and to Jeep products. My significant other purchased a 2006 Liberty Limited, CRD, 4x4 used with 25k miles.

I realize from reading this group that some of you don't like diesels and I'd like to take this opportunity to let you know that I really don't care. I like them. I own a Ram with a Cummins and my girl now owns this and we're as happy as pigs in shit. So, don't try to convert me to a gasser. It won't happen.

On to the question: I changed the rear diff fluid, transfer case and tranny fluid. Moved on up to the front diff and discovered something I had never see before working on my trucks. After removing the skid plate, there is another "thing" that covers the differential pan. Held on by three bolts to the diff and one bolt on the cross member. I attempted to take it off, but quickly discovered that removing this "thing" so that I could get to the diff was more involved than I thought. The one large bolt holding it to the cross member can't simply be taken out since it is blocked by other parts. So, I put everything back together, went inside and ordered the service manual for the Liberty. Still waiting for it to arrive.

What is the "thing", why is it there and how do I get it off?

Thanks, Craig C.
