Ignition switch question.

On my 91 YJ the ignition switch got jacked up while my mechanic was trying to fix the turn signal/wiper/high beam switch. Well the new switch has a few problems. Firstly, Is the heater blower supposed to be on when the key is in the Acc. position.? Secondly, when the switch is in the Off position a slight turn toward the Acc. postion will activate Acc. mode. There is no positive detent. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I've never had a vehicle where the heater blower would operate when the ignition switch was in the accessory position.

Your heater blower is an 'accessory' which is 'really' stupid in the newer Jeeps and makes the 'acc' key setting totally useless. Turn it on to listen to the radio and the blower turns on and kills the battery fast. The newer blowers are always turned on low at least. You can disable that by removing a switch on the vent control.

The fine tuning for the key position is down at the bottom of the steering column. The ignition switch has a slot adjustment so the rod from the key switch can be set right. Sounds like yours is maybe too low?

All the newer Jeeps I have played with have the heater fan always on low, you cannot shut it off. It turns on with the acc.

I bet if you check, your TJ has that too.

Maybe I was just screwed up in my thinking/memory, it wouldn't be the first time. I'm getting ready to drive off to work in the TJ, I'll check it out. :)

The ACC setting allows use of the electrical sutff without energizing the ignition system. I agree that there is seldom, if ever, a need for the heater motor to blow in this position, but as you pointed out the ventelation system is active in ACC. The fan might not work at all speeds however, and is restricted to the lowest setting. I don't know for certain if this is true or not.

All the speeds work in both my Jeeps and I just remembered you 'can' turn off the fan in the XJ if you slide the vent control all the way off. Forgot about that.

I just remembered someone using acc and forgetting to kill the fan or not knowing about it on low by default is better said, so the battery died.

With the fan switch 'off' and the vent/heat control anywhere but off, the fan is on low automatically in the newer Jeeps. My 88 Cherokee and the YJ's have it that way.

I forgot, it turns off only if you slide the vent/heat control to off.

I just checked and double-checked, my TJ's heater fan does not run when the ignition switch is in the Accessory position.

Interesting, maybe it was just AMC's dumb idea then...

My 93 XJ does the same thing, if key in ACC. fan runs (on whichever speed you have set). Dumb thing is, for the cig. lighter to work you need either ACC or run position selected, I prefer having that like the GMC truck, lighter always hot.

Snow did pass the time by typing:

Easy fix with a simple spdt switch. Got one in the ZJ. Actually two, one in the back also.

I think Ralph Nader got your hot lighter - claimed it was a safety hazard for kiddies. Now, with all the cell phones and other junk they've gone back to a hot plug but they call it an "accessory plug" since cigarettes and cigars are no longer PC.

Strange thing is, that before it went to the mechanic the fan definately did NOT come on in the acc. position. The mechanic claims well it's working right now.

From what I have seen all the AMC Jeeps have the fan as an accessory. Jerry says the Chrysler Jeep doesn't.

AMC designed some of the CJ7, the YJ and the XJ. I know my 88 XJ is like that. I don't know about the after 91 ones when Chrysler started changing things.

You 'can' still turn the sucker off by putting the vent control to off.

I don't think I've actaully been inside a YJ. Does the heater control (not the fan switch, but the heater/vent/etc selector) not have an "off" position, like it does in the Cherokee?

Yes it does with a switch at the end.
