I've no objection to a diesel, but no way would I buy a 2.8 litre one.

Dunno what it's like in the UK, but in the US, most Japanese cars are made domestically, especially trucks & SUVs. They have a greater foreign component percentage, but assembly is domestic. However, the tens of thousands of UAW jobs that went away in the 80s as the Big 3 cut overhead really just went away - the foreign-owned assembly plants in the US were non-union, and remain that way. Fairly well paid, but non-union.

Similar here - Toyota have a plant in Derby for example. I was offered a job by them, but turned them down as they seemed rude ; didn't appreciate the crude psychological tricks they played at the interview.
